Abstract

This thesis examines the money-driven, profit-minded aspect of the life of the famous seamen, patriot and explorer: Sir Francis Drake. I will prove that Drake - the buccaneer, later the Queen's pirate- was most of the time driven by the urge to accumulate wealth. Using contemporary sources, I will demonstrate that behind the mask of the famous seaman there was also the hard-core businessman, the privateer as well. When necessary, I will incorporate other bits and pieces about contemporary privateers, who influenced him to become a privateer, especially John Hawkins, Drake's relative.
