Abstract

Teaching vocabulary is one of the most important issues of foreign language teaching. There are a number of possibilities teachers can choose from to help them do this challenging task well. In this thesis I will examine the principles and techniques of teaching vocabulary, followed by an overview of the most common techniques of presenting new vocabulary. Then I will focus on practising newly learnt vocabulary, and, through the presentation of the results of a small scale classroom research, I will argue that young learners, especially the less able and/or motivated ones, can learn and retain vocabulary more efficiently if they practice them through games.
