Abstract

This thesis examines the importance of teaching culture in English lessons. Since 1900 several teaching methods have been applied and I would like to provide a comprehensive picture of them, though the highlight will be given to the latest, the Intercultural Approach. I will show afterwards why it is so important to acquire target culture not only the language. Next, I will point out some good ways teachers can use to teach culture more effectively such as project work, whole class mailing, exchange trips. Then I would like to connect project work with the 'Project' book series that are widely used here in Hungary. I will compare 'Project' book series published in 1985 and 2001 to find out how much they changed from the aspect of culture.
