Abstract

This thesis investigates the different factors influencing man's personality and the development of societies in the scope of XXth century modernist fictions. I will demonstrate a line of progress, along which an innocent being r eaches the 1 evel o f s ociety, and the p ossible drawbacks of being isolated and alienated. Using William Golding's Lord of the Flies and The Inheritors, and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, we will have a deeper insight into their symbolism and ideas about the secrets of human soul.
