Abstract

This study is an examination of the exercise of nationalism in Scotland between the Treaty of Union in 1707 and the turning of the 21st century. When I stayed in Scotland for a year in 1999, I felt that the Scottish had a stronger priority to being Scottish over British and I have always been surprised by the contrary between the strong Scottish identity and the lack of total independence of Scotland. In my thesis I try to fmd an answer for the reasons of this inconsistency. I aim to investigate the nature of Scottish nationalism from the civil and ethnic aspects and to identify which part of the Scottish society represents the civic and which one the ethnic nationalism. At the end I intend to fmd answer for the question that if the strong sense of national identity could lead to divorce between Scotland and the UK and to establish a stronger relationship with the European Union. Finding answers for these questions I try to prove my opinion that if the UK will not give more facilities to Scottish institutes to influence their own business, Scotland could claim their total independence finding new ally int he European Union.
