Abstract

The changes in women’s position taking place in Britain in the 19th century can be attributed to many social factors and tendencies. One of the most important factors was the increasing importance of women’s labour, with the number of employed (most notably middle-class) women increasing prominently after the 1850s. Women’s work was gradually becoming accepted in Britain through the professionalization of nursing. The purpose of this study is to show that one of the foundations of professionalization was the Crimean War of 1854-56, as it was the first period in British history where a large, heterogeneous group of women could partake in a high-responsibility job in an institutional setting. Through the content analysis and critical examination of contemporary primary sources by women nurses in the war, as well as secondary sources, this study provides an evaluation of women’s presence in the public domain through the nursing profession, the changes in women’s labour in mid-19th -century Britain, and the role of the Crimean conflict in the process.
