Abstract

This thesis examines the characteristics of the Japanese loanwords in the English language. One is the pronunciation difference between them and their origins and the other is the cultural areas which they are related to with the time of their borrowing. I will prove that the pronunciation is quite different because of the unmarked long vowels and the lack of correlation between spelling and pronunciation in English. Furthermore, I will prove that the majority of the Japanese loanwords were borrowed in the 19th and 20th centuries and also that the most of them are related to martial arts or culinary.
