As a first step the basic characteristic featues of detective stories are jröffíbrth which are discussed in details. The form ofstories as it is the most glaring feature comes first, then famous writers’ opinion and definition gives a comprehensive picture about the genre itself. The plot of detective stories is compared with other genres in general and similarities are noticed in connection with an exact genre. In the teion with a special emphasise since it carries the basic individuality of detective stories. Light is thrown upon the deficiency ofthe genre in the field of characterization and the traditions laid down bv Poe closes the first chapter. As a continuation of the mentioned parts the second chapter allows to inspect the birth ofthe genre under the hands ofEdgar Allan Poe and produces the feature characterizing only his stories. The third and fourth chapters introduce W.W.Collins and C.Dovle whose detective novels and stories are analysed in accordance with their traditions and innovations compared to the first samples of the genre. The study shows the fundamental difference between them by determining their emphasise. This line directly leads to the conclusion obtaining a summary. The study ends with the methodological approach of the topichow crime infiltrates English language teaching, especially in the books.
