In my work I will outline the development of the radio from its invention until now. I will give some definitions for the word mass media and then I will outline the role of the radio in the structure of mass media. As a next step, I will give a short description of the main types of media and I will use some stereotypes to illustrate the media's social impact. Afterwards, I will concentrate on the American society considering its crucial freedoms, especially through the First Amendment and the right to criticize. The third chapter is about the first steps of the new medium in 1899 through the technical development of Marconi's invention, the wireless telegraph. In the same part I will mention the interference of the radio and newspaper. Furthermore, I will illustrate the role of the wireless and its newly developed version, the radio in World War I. To clarify this point, I will define the importance of amateur receiving and the licensing of broadcasting stations. Following the war years of the fourth chapter I will detail the new function of the radio against the press in the 1930's. The fifth chapter-as a complex whole-combines the history of the radio from 1932 until the 1950's, the appearance of the television. The conclusion leads us to the present through the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and its impact on American society.
