Abstract

This work intends to examine how authentic reading materials can successfully be applied in language teaching. It consists of three main parts. In the first section numerous reasons are listed which reinforce the idea why it is important for a language teacher to use genuine texts in the classroom. The second part deals with the exploration of the reading materials that are suitable for making a language lesson more interesting and enjoyable. The first subpoint examines the connection between literature and language teaching. In the second subpoint the reader can get to know the various types of texts and their use in the language acquisition. There is also a treatment of the criteria on the basis of which texts can be selected. The third and last stage introduces a variety of activities that can be used with genuine reading materials.
