Abstract

Human values are important to examine in order to fully understand the society and ourselves. Values are relations, attitudes towards other people, events and life in general. They are also norms for ourselves, they influence our self-esteem and our will, for example. These values have been different in history, they have changed according to the changes in society. Values can be different in different countries, cultures and even in different generations also. Values depend on influences; an individual's order of values is always a mirror of the society and the country. That is why a country has to show an example to the people; an example which can be and should be followed. Different political systems show different values, some of which are harmful and dangerous. The United States of America and Hungary are two totally different countries with different backgrounds, histories, and cultures. In this thesis, the similarities and the differences will be shown in the development of the values throughout the history of the two countries. America, the land of dreams and possibilities was always in a unique position, now it is the leading power of the world, a country which is now a model to the world. Hungary is now a country of changes, western ideas have been established in the last few years, and now the country is in progress, but it has suffered a lot throughout history, mostly in the twentieth century. Now, the country is very sensitive, which means that the illnesses of the western world can easily infect the country. What are the values in these two countries now? What was and what is the most important to an individual in the United States and in Hungary? And why? What can we learn from history? It is important to name these values, because an individual's values show the standards, the culture and the civilization of a country.
