Abstract

There are two nations in the two corners of the world, whose situation might be the same. One should not accept what is on surface, should go beyond real facts, because history proves another thing. The Blacks' and gipsies' situation might show similarities but also differences. Their history is totally different, but their present situation shows similarities. There are a lot of facts what contribute on certain facts we would like to believe or not. America is the land of dreams but not for a major "black" spot. As we all know, the Blacks were taken there as slaves and they had to bear so many sufferings until in 1863; during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln had ended the slavery of Blacks, but their position in American society remained very bad. In this case the gipsies' situation was different, because they immigrated into Hungary in the 15thand 16`hcenturies. Because of their nomad, wondering, strange lifestyle people started hating them and that hate is still not over. We should ask the question: does difference let us hate anybody; is it enough that a different person, who is not the same as us, must be hated? Today we talk, but only talk about equality in each cases. But are the Blacks and gipsies really equal with whites? Actually, this is what this thesis is about. I compare their history and their situation now and analyse it through their welfare, culture, media and language. Education is also very important, though there are some major differences concerning this topic. Gips v children do only bad at school, are not segregated as Blacks were because of their colour of skin and language. Gipsies speak only Hungarian, do not have problems with the language but Black English is very different, for some is even hard to understand. But for many Blacks, standard English is not only unfamiliar, it is socially unacceptable. They feel, learning standard English must give up their own culture, they are dependent on a dialect that excludes them from full participation in the world they live in. So these two nations culturally are different but as facts show, their present situation is not so different. The "white power" mania is still going on and we cannot speak about equality until we do not let them be equal with us!
