Abstract

Coursebooks can have a great effect on teaching and learning process.In thisthesis, I will take into considerations the features of a good coursebook. After collecting several criteria which an appropriate teaching material should meet in the teaching of the four basic skills, as well as grammar and vocabulary, I examine the student - coursebook and the teacher - coursebook relationship. After considering advantages and disadvantages of using a coursebook, I will give the key questions of the coursebook assessment which the teachers should ask to select materials for their particular teaching context. According to the collected questions I will examine Hotline Starter by Tom Hutchinson. Finally, I will demonstrate that using supplementary materials is inevitable in language teaching if theteachers want to provide variety and offer their students richer options.
