Abstract

This thesis is about the role of comics in primary education from the point of view of a communicative coursebook, Project English One. The first large part, the theoretical background, is about the two main roles of comic strips. At first we can read a summary about the role of these kinds of stories in motivating children, then some thoughts how comics can play a significant part in developing children's knowledge of English. The second large part summarizes my personal experiences and the results of questionnaires filled in by teachers and students. After the chapter about the short characterization and the structure of the mentioned coursebook I will write about the teachers' opinion of the motivating effect of comics, why children like these kinds of stories. Then I will examine why and how these comic strips can serve as a starting-point for developing certain language learning skills (especially listening and reading), and what is typical of the vocabulary of Project English One.
