Abstract

My thesis analyses the significance of the classical theme of the hero's adventure in George Lucas' Star Wars film trilogy. I will gather evidences which prove that Lucas tells a very old story in a new costume. As a background to this I examine various theories on mythology as well as the mythological hero's journey in general. Using contemporary criticsm which investigate the nature and classical features of myths, my intention is to present that George Lucas uses archetypal images and characters as well as the ancient pedagogical function of mythology in order to create a modern myth.
