Abstract

This thesis examines the impact of the media on American society, politicians and politics. I will prove that although the media do not constitute a branch of government or even an organisation established to influence government, such as a political party or interest group, they have an impact on government. I will demonstrate that in addition to provide entertainment, the media provide political information and have become powerful enough to serve as a check on American government in many situations.
