Abstract
Jazz is original American music with popular roots and artistic ambitions, with improvisation as a large part. Its roots go back generations to the sophisticated rhythms of West African ceremonies and bending notes of European musical traditions. This thesis examines the development of jazz from the 1500 thto the World War H. and after it, focusing on swing and bebop. In my thesis I intend to prove that there are differences between swing and bebop in regard of their effect on society. Swing maintains the social establishment; bebop subverts the social structure and is revolutionary.
