Abstract

In my thesis I would like to examine how Fitzgerald characterized the Lost Generation's lifestyle and feelings through his novel The Great Gatsby. For this research I have to outline some aspects of economy, the effects of World War I and the main literary tendencies of this strange contradictory period. Fitzgerald's life was strangely connected with his novels, so I will give a short biographical background, too. After this I examine the characteristics of the Lost Generation through The Great Gatsby with emphasizing the following ideas: wealth, emptiness and carelessness. Since the themes of the novel are expressed through the characters, I have to examine the relationships among them. Also, I am going to examine the characters one by one because they are very individual, they all represent a person from Fitzgerald's own world.
