Abstract

This thesis examines European literature from the 17th century until the 20th century. I will prove that William Golding's Lord of the Flies has predecessors and followers in European literature. I will demonstrate that children and islands were interesting and popular topics of literature and the films that adapted these themes were succesful as well. The central topic of my thesis is William Golding's Lord of the Flies, hence I will also demonstrate the historical and philosophical background of the novel.
