Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to recall an extremely flourishing period of the English history through Katherine Mansfield's literary art. This wealthy decade was full of contradictions which led to the first world war. Nevetheless these years gave a lot of outstanding artists throughout Europe. London attracted the talented people from all over the world, one of them was Katherine Mansfield. Her writings are among the first pieces of the modern English literature which reflect the atmosphere of the first decade and follow the change of human's soul in the coming storm of history. This thesis is a survey of the different stages of her literary development, focusing on three significant short stories. 'A Birthday' is from her early period, the 'Prelude' is the achievement of post-impressionist literary style and 'The Fly' is from the last period when the modern features change her style and her voice becomes darker.
