Abstract

In this thesis a survey of the Compson brothers' deviant behaviours mostly as results of their extreme embeddedness in the Compson family will be undertaken. Through The Sound and the Fury it will be proved that a family cannot be idealized in an absolute sense. It cannot be marked as an unconditional scene for further improvement of mature individuals. Besides, my other aim is to show: in one's eyes how "abnormality" can be revalued to turn into "normal behaviour" produced by peculiar circumstances — for example if the motivations of the Compson brothers' actions are closely analysed. All these statements are to be demonstrated by descriptions of the family members' relations to each other while laying stress on those of the Compson brothers to their sister, Caddy, by the brothers' various obsessions and their peculiar attitudes to time. Some studies and critiques (materials from library and the Internet) about Faulkner's novel and Faulkner's Appendix will be used to achieve my aims.
