Abstract

In my thesis I intend to present the life and oeuvre of an extraordinary Englishman, John Paget who lived in the nineteenth century and became a respected member of the Transylvanian nobility. I am giving a detailed biography about him using most of his biographers works. I also aim to give a closer examination of certain areas of John Paget’s varied and multi-faceted life. I am focusing on such areas that played a major part in Paget’s decision to become a true Hungarian nobleman. I deal with his travelogue and his Hungarian and Transylvanian travels. Paget is primarily known or remembered as a writer and agriculturist. His travelogue was very popular and a major source of information not only for those who wished to travel but also for such people who were eager to extend their knowledge about this country. Moreover, I try to reveal the motives behind the increased travels to Hungary at that time. I compare Paget’s travelogue to one of his compatriots, Julia Pardoe. Her travelogue was just as remarkable at that time as Paget’s. Apart from his journeys, it is his Unitarian religious background that played an important part in Paget’s decision to choose Transylvania as his new homeland. Paget played an important part in helping the Unitarian Christian during difficult times. I also deal with Paget’s educational background since the dissenting academies, where Paget had also studied, were the centres of enlightened and rational thinking. Moreover, I focus on Paget’s patriotism, too. Namely, his role during the Hungarian revolution and war of independence. I intend to deal with his failed book on the Hungarian Cause which he wanted to write during his years in “exile.” I present his contemporaries opinion on him to give a better picture of that extraordinary person who lived the larger part of his life dedicated to his newly chosen country Hungary and Transylvania.
