Abstract
My thesis applies the theoretical framework of Government Phonology (GP) to palatalization in English and Hungarian along with the help of Element Theory. I explain English and Hungarian palatalization as the spreading of the palatality element I. It attempts to provide a less questionable and more transparent representation than those we can find in the phonological literature, which are rule-based or use distinctive features for example. After a general overview on the palatalization processes in the introductory part in part 1, part 2. contains the introduction of Government Phonology: its notions, principles and its working in some examples. Also here, I deal with analytic and non-analytic morphology. In the last section of part 2 I give a summary on Element Theory with introducing the characteristics of elements. In part 3 I present the data of English and Hungarian palatalization and I compare them. I also explain why a part of the English data will be excluded from the GP analysis. In the last section of part 3 I discuss some earlier approaches to English and Hungarian palatalization. I also give justification for the rejection of these earlier analyses. I. The main part of my thesis comes in section 4. with the analysis of English, then Hungarian palatalization data, after the proposal of palatalization as the spreading of the palatality element I. In order to demonstrate elemental spreading, I give the elemental compositions of the consonant systems of both languages, and I also explain the differences between them. In the analysis of the data itself I examine different processes of palatalization in English and Hungarian, and demonstrate the changes with elements in GP representations. For the problems surfacing throughout my analysis, I try to give acceptable solutions, like referring to the principle of Structure iii Preservation, or to examples in Ancient Hungarian. However, regarding some examples I cannot explain why a GP representation with the spreading of the element I is inadequate. At the end of section 4. I compare the analyses, and I also demonstrate the assimilatory character of palatalization in English and Hungarian with the elemental compositions of different natural classes. I also give a comparison of similarities and differences on the basis of GP. Finally as section 5. I give a conclusion of the analysis.
