Abstract

The purpose of this comparative thesis is to examine and answer the question if the rewritten Disney story of Pocahontas is harm or help considering her and her nation’s point of view. Besides analyzing the Disney version, the basis of the comparison is a book entitled The True Story of Pocahontas: The Other Side of History which is the first published, written format of Pocahontas original story told by her descendants. By taking everything into consideration, I reach the final conclusion that the sophisticated version of Disney is abusive and misleading. It does not just do harm, it cause damage to the history of Pocahontas and her nation. I seek to argue for this statement by demonstrating the differences of these approaches in detail. Obviously, some similarities are presented but these things are meaningless in contrast to destruction that Disney triggered. As I see, it is essential to be aware of this issue because I suppose that most of the people have misconceptions about Pocahontas. Since Disney productions attract millions of people, they must be responsible for their actions. History is an important part of everybody’s life so it is a sensitive topic that should be respected by all means.
