Abstract

This MA thesis focuses on the collective memory of the Holocaust in Csongrád county. The research question is the following: (1) How can the collective memory of the Holocaust be characterised in Csongrád county particularly including the Holocaust memorials, and the commemorative rituals? As a general overview, the thesis discusses Holocaust memory in the world then narrows down to Hungary. The major emphasis is laid on the Holocaust memorials and their placement, also, the tools of commemoration and the memorials days are summarized. Then the thesis describes the collective memory of the Holocaust on a local level, in Csongrád county. Four larger settlements are represented: Szeged, Makó, Szentes and Hódmezővásárhely. First, the key events of the Holocaust are discussed: the processes of the ghettoizations and the deportations along with the numbers of the victims of the Holocaust in the chosen settlements. Second, the collective memory of the Holocaust in the above mentioned cities are analysed based on individual field research which is supported by photos; and interviews were conducted with the local guides of the Jewish cemeteries and synagogues. The final chapter portrays the pedagogical aspect of teaching the Holocaust for foreign students in the Hungarian Studies departments since its research question is the following: (2) How can the tragedy of Holocaust be transmitted to foreign students within the frames of university education in Hungary? The methodology of teaching the complexity of the Holocaust starts with a general approach, then it continues with the crucial points that are needed to teach for foreigners in connection with the Holocaust of Hungary, for instance, the key historical data; and in the last part, the relevant educational materials for teaching the Holocaust in Hungary are listed. The final section focuses on the educational use of the public places since they are useful for teaching foreigners. A detailed field trip which concentrates on the Holocaust memorials of Szeged, is also composed.
