Abstract

This thesis examines the functions of code-switching in the English language classrooms. Altough the mainstream view about using the mothertongue in foreign language classes is: "use as less time as possible", the appearance of L 1 is unavoidable in many cases. I observed the phenomenon in classes of seventh and eight grades, in elementary schools. I will prove, that code-switching is not just an impediment during the process of second language acqusition; it can also give some help.
